In order to become a blacksmith, one's merchant must have job lvl 40. Although it is not required it is recommended that you get to job 50 before changing. There are two main advantages of changing at job lvl 50. First of all, it makes the Blacksmith test a bit shorter. Second, it is essential to have the extra 9 skill points if you are thinking of becoming a pure forger.
