I need a laptop for university and after some research, I planned to get the dell inspiron 1520, here are the specs:

Intel? Core? 2 Duo T7300 (4MB cache/2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista? Home Premium Edition
Jet Black Color with Matte Finish
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife ?
Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm
160G 5400RPM SATA HDD
256MB NVIDIA ?GeForce?8600M GT
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Microsoft Office Student Edition

All for only $1459 from dell.ca, but someone told me that if my laptop gets damaged and I want to repair it, I have to ship it over to dell and it will take around 2-3 months until i can get it back.

Is this the same with any other laptop? For example, if I buy a laptop from futureshop or bestbuy, can they fix it right there or do they ship it to the laptop manufacturer?

I'm going to be using the laptop throughout university so chances are something might get damaged with the laptop and I want it to get fixed quick.

So basically, should I just buy the Dell laptop or do I buy from somewhere else?

Thanks in advance.

depends on whats wrong with it if it is a hardware problem such as your screen is broken or they keyboard is messed up ect. they have to send it to the manufacturer for repairs. but for any software troubles bestbuy/futureshop will fix it for you in a few days.
and by the way don't get vista its not worth it ask for windows XP

Vista on those specs will crawl, get XP.

Buy an IBM ThinkPad X61, nice and light and small.. 7 hour battery life, too.

Don't even bother if it is a Dell, 99% of Dells are garbage, they are heavy, feel loose and just plain cheap in general.

Get a Lenovo T61.

I have a T41 myself, and I am very pleased with the service. I destroyed the system board, the memory and the CPU heatsink, and they gave me a free replacement repair which was done in 3 days. All I had to do is to give it to a service department which is only 10min away from my house.

The only 3 brands I will even bother with laptops are Asus, Lenovo and Apple.

@Splint: Everyone has to bash Dell cause they suck - a lot. Bad service. Bad computer. And just because its a cheap laptop doesn't mean one has to purchase it. I'd rather save up for a more reliable (not neccessarily 'good-good') computer than waste it on a Dell.
Go MacBook o.o
